Dimensions of culture

MYP Year 5 Language and literature

This week we will be investigating the parallel expressions of identity between a group and an individual.

When we began the unit, we used the metaphor of an onion and its layers to examine the layers of identity both visible and invisible, that we believed make up our Self.

This week we are extending our inquiries to see if there are relationships between how groups perceive collective identity and how an individual in that group might parallel those concepts, attitudes, and behaviors. Your task this week is to represent these relationships through a visual text that you create. Details are in the task specific clarifications on Managebac.

Some supplementary materials this week are Hofstede’s Dimensions of culture. One of the dimensions is found in this video.

Which other dimensions are found in Hofstede’s model?

How do these dimensions allow us to use historical and cultural perspectives to examine literature?

What questions might you ask to find out? Post your questions as comments to this post, by Wednesday May 7 at 9.30 pm.

  1. What are the advantage and disadvantage of the two styles of mindset? What might lead to their downfall? And what are the common between these two styles?

  2. Regarding the quote and the video posted on the blog. Ive come up with the question of, how can a persons past, inflict there identity through language and also determining if they are a “i” or “we”?

  3. Ignoring the audibility issue, My question towards this idea is that: How do an individual break out from a collective group, and gaining acceptance from others.

  4. How do individualism or collectivism shape a country to be either individualism or collectivism and transform that idea of individualism or collectivism to become the behavior and later the history of that country?

  5. Through living as an individual you live to please yourself, to improve yourself, and to focus on yourself, is that selfish living? Through living apart of a group do you lose yourself and just become another follower? Is there a balance; to truly care for yourself and others equally?
